What does YVC mean?
YVC stands for Youth Volunteer Corps, the largest of CYFC's programs and one of its first. For more information and to sign up as a new volunteer, go to the YVC page under Programs.
Can I get school credits for volunteering?
It's possible to receive credits for volunteering in our Youth Volunteer Corps program, however you need to check with your school administrators for details.
Why would I want to volunteer through YVC?
If you are under the age of 16, it can be difficult to find agencies who will allow you to volunteer. Because of our tried-and-true formula of sending teams of youth out with a paid Team Leader, agencies welcome our youth volunteers and actually depend upon them to accomplish their goals.
Even if you are over 16, you may find it a lot more fun to work as part of a team as opposed to volunteering on your own. You'll make new friends from all over the city, learn about the diversity in Calgary, develop your leadership skills, and build a nice resume of volunteer experience to add to your university and job applications!
Can I fulfill community service hours through YVC projects?
Yes, you can. Many youth complete volunteer hours required for school programs or as directed by the Youth Justice Committee by participating in YVC.
What is YVC in Schools?
YVC in Schools is simply a different version of the YVC program wherein a group of youth get organized in their school setting and come up with their own projects, usually right in their own community.
CYFC helps by supplying a Program Coordinator, and the school provides a person (usually a teacher) who helps facilitate projects with the student volunteers. A YVC in Schools group can range in size from 5 - 100+ students!
