GlobalFest There are few things in this world that can draw a large crowd quite like a spectacular fireworks display. Perhaps this is the reason why the partnership between Globalfest and the Youth Volunteer Corps remains as one of the most popular projects summer after summer. In rain or shine, Globalfest never fails to attract crowds of spectators and volunteers alike to its end-of-the summer festivities across the city. The success of Globalfest can be credited to the efforts of the Calgary Fireworks Festival Society who, in 2001, discovered in Elliston Park the perfect venue for the large-scale pyrotechnic productions that Globalfest is now known for. Realizing the potential that lay in the hills of Elliston Park, the Calgary Fireworks Festival Society joined together with the International Avenue Arts and Culture Centre to create the world-class not-for-profit celebration of diversity and culture that we know today. The summer of 2003 marked the first year of Globalfest, with nearly one hundred thousand spectators, countless volunteers and YVC’s first group of Globalfest youth volunteers. At Globalfest, Youth Volunteer Corps volunteers are given the opportunity to interact on a one-to-one basis with the many youth spectators attending the International Fireworks competition each night. As part of the night’s festivities, Globalfest features a number of large children’s activity tents, which have previously featured crafts focusing on environmentalism and recycled materials. Creativity and a strong sense of enthusiasm are a must as volunteers act on the frontlines to deliver, explain and assist with the activity. In addition to a busy night of meeting new faces and unique crafts, volunteers can also expect to walk away with the knowledge of having taken part in one of Calgary’s largest and most diverse celebration of culture. In recognition for their time, volunteers are welcome to stay and enjoy the night’s fireworks as well as take in the sights and sounds of cultures brought from across the world and showcased on the landscape of our hometown.
