The Crowfoot YMCA

The Crowfoot YMCA is a recreational facility found in the North West quadrant of Calgary. The Crowfoot YMCA has swimming pools, gymnasiums, strength training areas, a running track, multi-purpose rooms and a snack bar. In addition, the Crowfoot also offers drop-in babysitting and summer day camp programs.

Volunteers from the Youth Volunteer Corps (YVC) volunteer for the daycamps. The day camps offered by the Crowfoot YMCA are for ages 4 – 17. The YVC volunteers are assigned to groups of children from age 4 to age 12 and are encouraged to create their own “camp name”. Examples of camp names used this summer are Potato, Summer, Cherry, Simba and Bean Sprout.

There are a variety of different “options” for the campers including, swimming, crafts, tech, and sport options. The volunteers assist the camp counselors in leading games and activities, keeping the groups of children together, and ensuring a safe and fun environment for all. Counselors and staff at the YMCA are friendly and energetic, allowing for a fun experience for both volunteers and day campers.

A typical day of day camp would include a “campfire” at the beginning of the day to warm up and boost energy with camp songs and activities. After campfire, the day camp groups participate in various sports and games, with an emphasis on their “option” (ie, swim option includes an extra swimming time). In addition to sports like soccer, floor hockey and basketball, all daycamp groups enjoy at least one swim time per day as well as craft time. The day concludes with another campfire with camp songs and wrap up activities. Every week, the daycamp groups also go on an out trip, examples from the summer are trips to the Calgary Zoo, Adventure Zone, Telus World of Science, and Fish Creek Park.

The Crowfoot YMCA is a popular project for volunteers and many return every summer knowing that they will have a lot of fun while contributing a much appreciated service in their community.
