SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL -- YVC in schools PROFILE

Initiated in 1968, Sir Winston Churchill High School has grown today to be an exceptional high school that houses several clubs, successful athletic teams, unique courses, and the International Baccalaureate program. Sir Winston Churchill High School (SWCHS) has always focused on developing strong, independent students who are assets to society. One way this school is meeting this aim, is through its participation in the Youth Volunteering Corps (YVC) in Schools program.

SWCHS’s YVC in Schools group brings together nearly 100 volunteers and is the largest in the school. To help manage such a large endeavour, Churchill has a YVC steering committee consisting of seven students. These students help lead and create new projects within the school, community, and city.

Sir Winston Churchill High School’s YVC in Schools group has been involved with many volunteering activities including: helping out at a senior’s home, assisting in making gift packages for the YWCA, volunteering with the Salvation Army, writing letters for veterans, helping out at various school events, and volunteering at a food bank. They have also started unique programs including: a drive to collect plastic bags to help package food-items for the food bank, and Cards for a Cure, a project wherein students make greeting cards to raise funds for HIV/AIDS in Africa. It was very exciting when this project was selected to win the Calgary YMCA Peace Medal for the top International Youth Group.

The Youth Volunteering Corps in Schools at Sir Winston Churchill is having, and shall continue to have, an impact in bringing students together in our school, helping the community and city, as well as assisting parts of the world that are in dire need of help.
