James Fowler High School is located in the Northwest part of the city. In its initiation year 1966 the school had a population of approximately 600 registered students. The school boasted the normal core curriculum and options to suit the needs of it students. James Fowler has grown today to 50 registered students and one of the most diversified curriculums to cater to its very broad community of students. Through this growth and change, James Fowler has always been strong minded in character building of their students, and one of which is the Volunteer Club.

Through the years, James Fowler has made efforts is recognizing the different needs of its community and encouraged pride and participation of its students to make a difference. The students of James Fowler have responded to the needs and have taken occasion to become ambassadors to these opportunities, which also help them expand their understanding of the necessities, within their communities at large. While James Fowler has worked with many agencies, they have also have partnered and built long term relationships with others. These would include, the Spruce Lodge Retirement centre, Forzani’s Mothers Day Run, Interfaith Foodbank, Operation Christmas Child, Properties Mom’s Support Group, to name a few. While the external agencies are an important factor of making a difference, the Volunteer Club also balances their backing to school events, by providing their support to ensure that School Pride is infused within the group and the school at large. These include: Post Secondary Fairs, Parent nights, Awards night and Art Garage Sales.

The club currently has fifty plus active members, pumped and ready to go at any given time. The accumulated volunteer hours for 2004-2005 to date, Drum Roll Please …1295.75 hours.

The forthcoming programs are: Interfaith Foodbank, Operation Christmas Child, Blood Donor Clinic, Frozani’s Mother Day Race, Spruce Lodge Retirement Centre and the Plastic Bag Campaign, with lots of little ones on the way.

Teams of students have always worked with great pride, diligence and team spirit, as ultimately volunteerism is about one community of hands making the difference to many!
