YVC CLUB IN PROFILE

The Volunteer Club at Western Canada High School features a large group of committed, passionate, and hardworking students who come from all walks of life who work together to make a difference in their school community and the Calgary Community at large. This organization at the school started out with about 10 people in the year 2004, doing minimal projects such as raising money for the Tsunami relief, and doing a few select projects with the Youth Volunteer Corps of Calgary. Last year however, the Volunteer club grew to a number that went beyond our wildest dreams and increased its number to about 45 members altogether. In the Volunteer club at Western there is flexibility in the Volunteer projects that one decides to take on, as well as the degree of commitment one wishes to render. This is one of the aspects of this club that makes it such a successful one, because anyone can join and decide to partake in any of the activities of the club as they wish. Last year our first project as a club consisted of running a Children’s Book Drive in partnership with the Calgary Learning Center and Husky Energy. Our school alone raised over 2000 books for this very worthy cause. Secondly, our school raised money for the Royal Canadian Legion in honor of Remembrance Day in November and Sold over 700 Texas donuts for this organization. Western’s Volunteer Club partnered with other clubs in the school to assist in packing food hampers for the Food bank around Christmas time. This proved to be a very HUGE operation because we as a school raised more boxes of food than any other school in Calgary! Shortly thereafter, around February Western’s Volunteer club hosted The Western Olympics which featured Mini- Olympic trials of different activities. Via this event we were able to expand our boundaries and become better known in the school as an all- rounded club that extended its wings over different aspects of school activities. Our last Campaign was titled Toonies for Transplant, which was a fundraiser that included donating money for organ donations. This turned out to be a huge success and was a great way to end the year. Overall we as a club did various fundraisers for different organizations including a book drive, food hamper donations, raising money for the legion, raising money for school via an event called Celebrate Western, as well as worked hand in hand with Calgary’s Youth Volunteer Corps to have an extremely successful Volunteer Club at Western Canada High School.
