PROGRAMS > YOUTH VOLUNTEER CORPS > Global Youth Service Day Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) Calgary will take place on April 25, and 26, 2009. Global Youth Service Day is the largest annual celebration of Youth Engagement and Volunteerism. This year, the Youth Volunteer Corps (YVC) Steering Committee took on the theme of 'Breaking Down Bear-riers', which will take place on April 25 and 26, 2009. The purpose of this project is to promote awareness and celebrate the diversity of our city through education of the various cultures. On Saturday, April 25th we will hold a multicultural celebration at the Parkdale Community Centre. There will be various cultural organizations present to educate the public on their unique traditions. Entertainment, food, and crafts from around the world will also be a part of this special day. In particular, children will have the opportunity to decorate stuffed bears to represent different nations. It is our hope that through education, we can break down the barriers of misunderstanding that divide us. The YVC Steering Committee will provide special prizes for young people involved to motivate them to actively participate in an educational scavenger hunt. On April 26th, the YVC Steering Committee will donate the decorated stuffed bears to different agencies that work with children. These bears will not only provide comfort but education of different cultures. I have hope that stems in large part from my knowledge that the future of this planet lies in the tremendous energy, enthusiasm, and commitment of young people around the world. I have often said that every individual counts, every individual has a role to play, and every individual makes a difference. Global Youth Service Day proves it. Let us support this opportunity to move forward with hope -- with faith in ourselves and in our intellect. And let's celebrate the indomitable spirit of youth. Jane Goodall,
